Updates After March 2023

Litigation concerning Mifepristone and other healthcare issues has emerged since the writing of the March 2023 Report, "Changes Ahead: Abortion Policy Proposals Affecting Reproductive Medicine." Additionally, several US states have enacted legislation to curtail or protect reproductive rights. ASRM has compiled these updates to keep members apprised of current legislation and litigation challenges.

In January 2023, lawmakers across the country reconvened under state capitol domes to kick off the first new legislative sessions since the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (No. 19-1392, 597 U.S. ___) delivered a devastating blow to Americans’ access to reproductive health care.

State Abortion Trigger Laws: Potential Implications for Reproductive Medicine

The U.S. Supreme Court’s opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (597 U.S. __, 2022), overturned the nearly 50-year precedent of Roe v. Wade (410 U.S. 113, 1973), which conferred a Constitutional right to abortion, and has sparked a litany of changes in state laws across the nation. In thirteen states, so-called “trigger” laws have and are set to take effect which ban or severely restrict abortion care.
